Zach's plan to build a Colorado that works for everyone
We need more pathways to good-paying jobs that don’t saddle families with massive debt. I believe state government plays a vital role in creating opportunity for every Coloradan regardless of race, gender, or income. In 2015 and 2016, I helped to design and launch CareerWise Colorado, a nonprofit that connects high school students with paid apprenticeships in local businesses. I worked to start this program because I believe real on-the-job training prepares kids to compete and gives them a stake in their future success.
I support expanding affordable, flexible housing options so that regular, hardworking Coloradans aren’t priced out of their own neighborhoods. A booming economy can create a lot of opportunity, but it also creates challenges that, as progressives, we need to face head-on. Our state’s long-term success is held back if our economic success is leaving folks behind.
With Obamacare under attack by Donald Trump, we need to strengthen our state-level options to make sure everyone can afford coverage. In Denver, nine percent of the population still does not have insurance. I think that’s wrong. I will fight to ensure regular Coloradans have access to insurance despite Donald Trump’s attacks on insurance access.
I believe Colorado needs strong, well-funded public schools that provide students and teachers with the resources they need to succeed. Colorado is currently 42nd in the country in spending per student, and 50th in teacher wage competitiveness. We can do better. By providing access to apprenticeships and making educators’ wages more competitive, we can put in place long-term solutions that prepare our kids to succeed in a 21st Century economy.
From addressing the effects of climate change to fighting Donald Trump’s plan to sell our public lands to the highest bidder, we have a lot of work to do to reduce emissions, fight pollution, and increase our use of clean energy. We need to build our state’s infrastructure for alternative fuel vehicles, to create more training programs for clean energy jobs, and to protect Colorado’s water for future generations.
The Trump administration’s demonization of immigrants and refugees has disgraced our country. The use of police state tactics to target law-abiding families should concern each and every one of us. From protecting DREAMers to standing up to ICE, it’s our moral obligation to fight for a Colorado everyone is welcome.
Gun violence is a public health crisis that demands action, and the prevalence of military-style weaponry in our society only makes it worse. I will stand up to the NRA and their powerful lobbyists to fight for common sense gun safety reform. I want Colorado to lead the way by treating gun violence as a public health problem.
